Mentor Capital Management Inc.
My job is to guide clients as they strive to accumulate and preserve wealth. To do this I use proven techniques to minimize taxes, manage risk and prepare for the future. My work aims to foster capital accumulation and goal achievement.
I am dedicated to the Fee-Only approach to wealth management, and I enthusiastically accept the fiduciary responsibility that this brings. I pledge always to act in clients’ best interests, avoiding conflicts of interest whenever possible and disclosing them whenever present. There are never any hidden fees or agendas.
My background and experience
I founded Mentor Capital in 1992, after spending 14 years as a journalist, first as a reporter and editor, then as editor in chief of a group of newspapers in suburban Chicago.
I have a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri. In 1994 I completed the professional education program of the College for Financial Planning, Denver, Colo., and received my license as a Certified Financial Planner. I am licensed as an Investment Advisory Firm Principal and formerly held licenses as a Registered Representative of the NASD and as an Illinois Insurance Producer.
I am a fourth-generation resident of Elmhurst, Ill. An avid outdoorsman, I also enjoy writing, traveling and spending time with my family and dogs. I have served as a member of the Elmhurst College Planned Giving Committee and have held leadership positions with the Elmhurst YMCA Board of Trustees, Bethel United Church of Christ, the Edison School PTA and the Elmhurst Rotary Club, for which I served as head of the Foreign Exchange Program.
My investment philosophy
After many years of advising clients on their investments, I have determined that the most prudent approach is one involving allocation of assets among the classes using low-cost, index-based exchange-traded funds, with periodic rebalancing.
This means that portfolios are constructed from a variety of investment types (broadly, stocks, bonds and cash) that work well together and whose relative risk and return are measurable and predictable. Portfolios are designed to meet clients’ time constraints and risk tolerance. As values stray, we rebalance to the original targets, thereby “buying low and selling high.” We believe that attempts to “time” markets invariable fail.
Using this approach, I have helped hundreds of clients reach their financial goals and objectives.
