Robert Gerstemeier, MBA, CFP®, EA
Gerstemeier Financial Group, LLC
Bob is the President and founder of Gerstemeier Financial Group, LLC, a Fee-Only Registered Investment Advisory firm with offices located in Chicago and Cincinnati. He has completed the Certificate in Financial Planning Program at Florida Institute of Technology and subsequently earned the Certified Financial Planner designation from the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards. Bob attended Miami University on a U.S. Navy Scholarship and has also received an MBA from Embry-Riddle University. He conducted additional studies focused on developing estates and trusts for clients and is also an Enrolled Agent with the IRS.
Prior to establishing Gerstemeier Financial Group, LLC, Bob worked as a Financial Analyst in a financial planning organization that controlled more than $500 million of personal assets, corporate treasury accounts, and pension/profit sharing plans. While there, Bob worked with high-net worth individuals and corporate clients to develop comprehensive retirement plans and investment portfolios.
Bob has also spent significant time in the US Navy as a Naval Flight Officer operating reconnaissance aircraft from carriers in the Persian Gulf and Western Pacific regions. In addition to his flight duties, Bob served as the Squadron Legal Officer. He educated sailors about getting out of debt, establishing savings programs, and investing for retirement. He also developed and performed pre-deployment education seminars to inform sailors and their families on the importance of wills, power of attorneys, and financial preparation prior to their extended deployments. He spent time at the Pentagon in Washington, DC where he was selected to work on Naval Intelligence issues. In 2009, Bob was recalled back to active duty for 15 months and was sent to Afghanistan to be part of a Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT).
After personally experiencing high pressure sales techniques from a financial planning company focused solely on military members, Bob searched for a better way to work with an advisor. This search ultimately led him to choose financial planning as a follow on career. In 2003 he started his firm with the desire to work with clients in a way where the advisor’s goals are aligned with the client’s. He is a staunch advocate of the Fee-Only approach to financial planning and regularly speaks to groups about what it means to be a fiduciary and why it is so important.
Bob is currently the Chair of the Board of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA), an exclusive group of financial advisors that have a fiduciary duty to their clients. He also volunteers for local charities and is active in community organizations. He has been quoted in numerous publications including The Wall Street Journal, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, Chicago Tribune, MSN Money, Research Magazine, and Investment News.
